| Time Management Tips for Landing More Acting Gigs If you're an actor in a big city, you already know how tough it is to juggle everyday life with auditions. Between delayed trains, unpredictable work hours and the million other variables that can throw off the flow of a routine, it can be down right difficult to make a living and pursue a passion at the same time. It takes sacrifice, dedication and a positive attitude to make a life in acting work. Here are some tips to get your scheduling habits in shape so you can land those gigs, and still have time to take a breather. 1.) Always carry a reliable planner, schedule or calendar. Smart phones have made this task easier by giving actors the ability to electronically insert schedules directly into mobile phones. Some people prefer the old fashioned method of carrying a daily planner. Putting things down in writing reinforces the memory as well as encourages actors to stick to their original schedule, thus making the day more fruitful. The Actor Track is a great scheduling tool for performers who want to have their audition and callback log at their fingertips. Check it out here http://www.actortips.com/holdon-logs-actortrack 2.) Find a flexible job. Serving, temping and freelancing are popular day jobs among actors for a reason. They allow for schedules that can free up time in the mornings and afternoons for auditions. Finding a job that pays the rent and still leaves room for classes, auditions and rehearsals takes a multitasker. Be honest with employers to ensure that they know your schedule needs to be flexible and so they are not disappointed when you ask off to attend auditions. 3.) Start your day bright and early. Waking up at 8 AM after bartending until last call is a drag, but acting is a labor of love. Getting up early ensures enough time to sign up for auditions, hit the gym, work a shift, get your haircut, attend your vocal coaching session . . . you get the point. Life can get crazy, and waking up early will help you be a happier and more productive person. This is a great habit to get into sooner than later. 4.) Don't forget to schedule "me" time. Life in the city can be stressful if you forget to give yourself the TLC you deserve. Things can get hectic, but always remember to allow for personal time. Your health and sanity should never take the backseat, so please remember that while work is important, it's not worth developing panic attacks. Remember to breathe. Schedule time to get a manicure, read a book or spend time in the park. Your body and mind will thank you for it. 5.) Sign up for auditions at the beginning of the day. Get into the habit of arriving to these calls early to increase your chance of being seen. Actors often sign up and have time to leave the site to run errands or put in a few hours at work while casting directors see those ahead on the list. Arriving at the audition site early shows that you're serious about the job. You'll look professional and be more likely to get time in front of the people who matter.
